Comet C/2025 R2 (Swan)

Astrophotography-StarParty

A new comet was discovered on September 11th, just a day before the comet reached perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun.

I collected close to an hours worth of total exposure on it last night (55 x 60s exposures) before it disappeared below the horizon, here is the result:

It is currently located close to Mars in the western sky at dusk, and will gain altitude over the next few weeks. Programs such as Stellarium (screenshot below) or online tools like https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/ can be used to find the current location.

Hopefully we get clear sky on Saturday night for the Wai-iti Star Party and get to showcase this comet with some EAA (electronically assisted astronomy).
