Sagittarius Rising
August Saturday 23rd will be our next Dark Sky Park event.
Last month we celebrated Scorpius, it is followed by Sagittarius, “Sagittarius Rising” is a fitting name for the night as the constellation will be rising in the East over the hill at sunset.
The tea pot shaped constellation almost hangs, by the handle from the tail of Scorpio. The area between them is the approximate centre of the galaxy. The Eagle Nebular M16 or NGC 6611, Omega Nebular M17 or NGC 6605, M25, and M23 also are found in the area.
Public viewing from 7pm to 9pm. Suggested Koha $5.00 pp or $ 10.00 for families and groups
This event will be held at the Wai-iti Dark Sky Park at 437/439 Wakefield- Kohatu highway, Wai Iti, south of Wakefield.
Health and safety issues to note: The riverside of the reserve, where the public park has been severely eroded, don’t attempt to go beyond the danger tape when parking in this area, and watch for puddles gumboots may be a good option.
